Cristina Schek
Cristina Schek is the photo-sensitive kind. A Transylvanian-born, London-based artist working across photography, digital montage, textile and installation. Self-taught in photography and far removed from documentary tradition, she uses the camera as a point of departure rather than an endpoint.
Influenced by literature, cinema, theatre, art history, spoken narratives and the psychological power of sound, Schek constructs layered visual worlds where identity is reimagined. Her work transforms the photographic image into something cinematic, theatrical and uncanny, often moving beyond the frame. Her practice explores how imagined realities can feel more psychologically truthful than documentary ones. In Schek’s work, the self becomes both subject and symbol, and storytelling becomes a way of venturing into the unknown.
