Float Mounting Artwork | Focus on Local Artist Owen Delaney

Local artist & map maker Owen Delaney at Waymarked.art creates fascinating traditional hand drawn maps, inspired by the cartographers of years gone by. True works of art which we are thrilled to be examining up close and personal, right before framing them. There’s always a minute detail telling the tales of many adventures!

This is an example of artwork floating over the mountboard, in a dark brown wooden frame, perfectly complementing the hand made Khadi cotton paper.

float mount is when the image looks like it's hovering on top of your mountboard rather than peaking through a window. Many people choose to mount artwork on textured paper, watercolour or time-worn documents, like old maps or handwritten letters, so that they’re suspended above an uncut mountboard within a picture frame. This technique is called float mounting, and it creates a very professional and unique presentation that showcases the original nature of your piece when presented in a custom frame. The suspension often casts dramatic shadows while also allowing artwork with raw or frayed edges to take centre stage.
