'The Ceiling in the Sky' by Cristina Schek Winner of W4th Plinth, Public Art Project Curated by Abundance London

Brimming with elation, we are delighted that Cristina Schek's resplendent creation 'The Ceiling in the Sky' has ascended to the prestigious W4 Fourth Plinth, unveiled by none other than the legendary Dame Siân Phillips on Sunday 23rd April 2023.

Bravo, Cristina, on this momentous accomplishment!

Embracing the ethos of the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, the Chiswick W4th Plinth is a rolling programme of temporary public art curated by Abundance London since September 2019. The inaugural piece, a collection of music hall performers at the Empire Theatre, was created by artist Sir Peter Blake, a long time Chiswick resident. Every six months the large image, 4x4m, on the TfL brick wall of the railway embankment at Turnham Green Terrace changes, showcasing an exciting artwork, short-listed by a jury, and voted on by the public.

With this artwork, The Ceiling in the Sky, we go back in time to that pure wild wood that will eventually be urbanised and populated by some of the greatest creative minds in history. Within the canopy of the forest, we can see projections of their future imaginations. This is the fertile forest floor from where the creations of many artists could grow tall and strong, reaching up to the sky.

The artwork was shortlisted from nearly 500 entrants by a panel of judges along with another piece by the same artist. Thousands of votes were cast in a poll by members of the public to pick the winner.

Karen Liebreich of Abundance London, the volunteer group which organised the installation, said: "Cristina’s work perfectly symbolises the intersection between art and nature that Abundance also strives for."
